after living in africa, south america, then london, ohes first made a name in paris by playing analog lives with the dynamiterie crew, first as they resident artist and then as the new artistic director of their new label. it is while playing live in the french city of pau that he met behzad & amarou. they shared the same views on the perception of music, thus created a particular affinity. after this event, they chose to collaborate under the boa moniker (behzad ¹ ohes- amarou), and invited him to release his new ep on bear records. in this first ep, ohes moves between a slightly dystopic robotic house, sharp discoid grooves and melancholic exoticism. this new adventure present a rich diversity in these four personal tracks, influenced by his numerous travels.

i made music together with lee for years (alongside mick rolfe) as last waltz. he also worked as lizards with james hadfield (james released solo for me me me 02), oli worriner, is a talented young northerner who’s already making a great name for his solo output, both under his own name and his traela alias, as well his label “tunnyl recordings”.
i’m really flattered that they’ve let me release their first full solo release, and i love how they’ve brought out each others deeper and more emotive sides in these 2 tracks. shit robot is a hero of mine. i basically wore out the grooves on a bunch of his dfa stuff from just over 10 years ago, and i’ve avidly bought everything he’s released since. i met him this summer for the first time when we shared the bill at a festival, and was so happy to find that he’s also lovely guy in real life. they say you should never meet your heroes, but i don’t subscribe to that as this meeting led to not one, but two fantastic remixes for me me me 08. the originals are a bright mix of melodically analogue left leaning house, while the remixes zero-in on a punchier dancefloor vibe, with an epic version goodnight, as well a more heads down disco dub.
so yeah, links within links, and keeping it northeastern again i guess.

vinyl only, alex took his first musical steps by studying piano and guitar at the young age of 6. his fascination for the more outlandish, experimental side of each instrument corrupted his lessons and sent him down a modular synths and tape loop composition wormhole. years later alex resurfaced, got himself clean and, through connections made while spending time as a vocal audience member (and sometimes uninvited participant) at lyman woodard, phil ranelin, and other tribe- and motown-linked gigs in cass corridor during the mid-1970s, spent time as a session musician for earth wind and fire, chic, and prince. it was only toward the mid-90s he found himself enthralled by the techno and house sounds of detroit and chicago so he went into the woodshed and came out firing electronic salvos.

the penultimate release on optimo trax (at least for now) comes from tel aviv’s mighty kalbata. i was already a big fan and was so delighted when he got in touch to see if i would be interested in releasing something by him. unusually for optimo trax this is one track in 3 versions but each version is so different that often i play them all in one dj set. originally there were two versions but as kalbata is a renowned master of dub (check out the documentary online about him recording in jamaica), i gently persuaded him to do a no-holds-barred dub mix too which appears here as enkuan pt 3. a few words about the record from kalbata – i went to ethiopia in the beginning of 2017 to record musicians. the most memorable one was mulugeta teshome who plays the washint flute on this record. it’s a traditional ethiopian flute made out of wood, and mulugeta came to the studio carrying a whole bag of them, each one in a different key. we chose the scale and started the recording session. i ended up taking the tracks a lot further with the three cuts on the record but really it all started that day, in a small studio shack in addis ababa.

following the success of the last split release from label bosses adam shelton and subb-an, one records deliver a heavy-weight remix package of self control/ only now from perlon favourites melchior productions ltd aka thomas melchior and akufen aka horror inc. a standout release for the label, original tracks self control and only now are masterfully reworked by melchior and akufen who both utilise the distinct vocals from isis salam to deliver two monumental tracks. one records have enjoyed forming a bond with melchior this year, inviting him to play at label showcases in barcelona for off sonar and gotwood festival in the uk. they look forward to inviting both melchior and akufen to upcoming label parties.

xan is a moscow-based producer originally from the town of votkinsk – the birthplace of pyotr tchaikovsky. xan then moved to st. petersburg, and eventually to moscow where he became part of the johns’ kingdom community. there, he began solidify himself as an established electronic music producer and dj. his dedication allowed him to fuse new influences with his own musical background as well as single-handedly organise a unique underground festival in hometown votkinsk. later he becomes a resident of the main diy club in moscow, rabitza, and a frequent guest at other notable events such as arma17, boiler room or nts.

in 1996 serotonin label heads selway and szostek went to moscow to perform at the invitation of &#1055,&#1058,&#1070,&#1063, magazine. synapse performed at the -waterclub- and met the legendary dj compass vrubell. they went to his -studio- where he had perfected the art of making entire tracks out patterns on the yamaha dx-5. szostek brought a dat of these jams back to nyc and schmer-003 dj rx-5 -a taste for crap- was released as a small run white label in 97. the run sold out and disappeared to be forgotten forever... until 2016 szostek casually mentions its existence to techno uber-nerd nina kraviz who just had to have it for her -fabric 91- cd. so dj rx-5 was back from the ash heap of history and schmer got a new release from him on schmer07. then schmer got the word out far and wide that they d like a remix ep for two of the originals: compass provided stems because like a miracle he still had the patterns after 20 years. heeding the call were pointsman, tripmastaz, steve stoll and schmer s own bpmf. so this is what you get: -a taste for remix-. it will leave your lips wanting more, for sure!

recently, superpitcher was invited to go on a safari in south africa. he bought a custom made safari hat at his favorite milliner in cologne (ju&#776,,,rgen eifler) and set off with big eyes and a pair of binoculars. it was wild and wonderful and he saw many exotic (and big!) animals, even a leopard in a tree that told him the secret of the universe. he forgot what the leopard said because his mind was still playing and replaying the sound of what he heard on the first night of his arrival – the hypnotic and moving sound of the voices of africa, the voices of the wonderful tanda tula staff choir. there, the choir members work during the day at the camp and at night entertain the guests with their captivating voices and energetic dancing. so impressed was he with their songs and beautiful shangaan language that he decided to record a cd for them to sell in the shop at their camp and now this precious recording is also available through hippie dance / bush recordings on vinyl and cd for you in whatever wherever camp you are. the lp of the tanda tula choir comes with a very pretty poster.

we ve had our eyes and ears on tee mango for a while now. his debut album imperfections is a future classic in our book and the tribute series has been part of our dj-sets for a while now. in short we had to get him to do an ep for local talk. dadhaus ep is forward-thinking music with an edge (undoubtedly sharpened through countless studio hours). tee channels the deep house flavours of detroit and chicago across four tracks of exquisitely executed percussion and sample-not-sample work. its another winner from the man like tee mango.

volphonie is the new label of chris honorat, resident and creator of the automatik events at the rex club in paris. with a dark and hypnotic music inviting to night-time voyage and introspection, volphonie is a label that chris wants at his image and in conformity with his techno religion. scan x, a pioneer of electronic live music in europe and laurent garniers sound engineer, provides the first release of the label with the track alien symphony, a piece in the artists purest tradition, a truly sound odyssey revolving around a deviant lead and heady. marcel fengler delivers an aerial remix faithful to the original spirit of the track, but even more hypnotic and captivating. keikari, one of the most promising artists among the new generation of french producers, imposes us his brutal and uncompromising version, while electric rescue, the most prolific french activist through his label skryptom, takes us to the rave with a mental techno that only him owns the secret.

berlin based zehnin keeps up a fine release schedule by asking blawan to remix its inaugural ep from lucy. once again focussing on experimental, ambient and techno sounds, it is another fascinating release. blawan has been in his own sound world for years now. releasing on the likes of hessle audio, hinge finger and his own ternesc, hes made brutalist, heavily textured tracks, big room tools and dark grooves with freaky sound design. its all helped to make him one of the most interesting producers of the day, and here he shows another side to his sound. first up is his version of ‘the hermit, which is seven spacious and mysterious minutes of creeping pads and implicit rhythms. dark but inviting, its stripped back, hollowed out techno that manages to be hugely absorbing and menacing without any clearly defined drums. on the flip is the equally beguiling ‘the high priestess. deep, subliminal kicks set the tone as groaning riffs, train-track percussion and distant, tortured pads all slowly hypnotise. it builds in pressure and creeps you out as it locks you ever further in. this is evocative dead-of-night music that says a lot in impressively economical ways.

the debut dub syndicate set from 1982, pre-dating the involvement of mainstay style scott. this features various members of creation rebel and african head charge turning out a wild dub set, with hard-hitting rhythms and fx-mutated melodies phasing in and out of the mix . recorded quickly with track titles cheekily poking fun at the contemporary series by the scientist which pitted him against various b-movie foes. the tunes themselves however are deadly serious, with version excursions on some classic on-u vocal cuts such as “bedward the flying preacher” and “across the red sea”, and a continuing commitment by producer adrian sherwood to take his love of reggae and filter it through his exploratory and uniquely english approach. re-cut at dubplates & mastering in berlin. includes download card with bonus track and sleevenotes by steve barker (on the wire)

along with his rival, cornell campbell, johnny clarke was one of the most esteemed singers of the roots reggae era. having grown up next door to a popular sound system on waltham park road in western kingston, clarke s early fascination with music led him to hang out at studio one with jacob miller while still at school. he then made the rounds of talent shows with barry brown, sugar minott and the diamonds, which led to a debut recording in 1973, for the pianist glen stair, which remains unreleased. an early effort for clancy eccles, ‘god made the sea and sun,’ was not promoted properly, though ‘everyday wondering,’ for rupie edwards, impacted in britain, ‘golden snake’ for stamma houghton and a cover of smokey robinson’s ‘you really got a hold on me’ for glen brown were also false starts. the breakthrough finally came in 1975 when clarke linked with bunny lee, who had him voice the rastafari landmark ‘none shall escape the judgement’ (written by earl zero, who failed to muster a credible take), which kick-started the ‘flying cymbal’ craze. clarke’s resultant debut album, enter into his gates with praise, mixed hard-hitting rastafari devotional material with sympathetic cover versions of classics by the likes of the paragons, slim smith and delroy wilson, along with a few reggae renditions of some vintage american r&b.

lsd is an ongoing musical collaboration between longtime electronic music innovators luke slater, steve bicknell and david sumner focusing on psychedelic aspects of techno while emphasizing the cross-pollination of each members style and rhythmic sensibility. personal ties between the three can be traced back across continents and developments in dance music, with steve first inviting luke to play his legendary lost party series in london in the early 90s, resulting in mutual remixes for pioneering techno imprints cosmic records and nova mute. almost a decade later in the year 2000, dave, a native new yorker, befriended steve after inviting him to play limelight in manhattan. over the years, dave and luke would also have numerous encounters, first forming a musical bond in 2009, with dave later co-producing lukes early l.b. dub corp material (roller, 2013).
